Mount Pleasant Community Homeschool

General FAQ

Is this a school?

No, we are not a school. We are a Christ-centered homeschool co-op—a cooperative effort among families to supplement home education. Parents remain the primary educators and are responsible for their child’s academic records and overall schooling.

How does the co-op work?

Our co-op provides à la carte classes that students can take to enrich their homeschool journey. Parents and teachers offer classes on a volunteer basis. Students choose which classes to attend, and families are encouraged to be selective to avoid overextending themselves.

What is the purpose of the co-op?

Our mission is to support homeschooling families by offering educational and social opportunities that would be difficult to provide alone. Our mission is to supplement, not replace, home education. We aim to build community, support families, and offer opportunities that would be difficult to do alone. We hope to bless families with flexibility, encouragement, and Christ-centered learning.

Do I have to be a teacher to participate?

No, parents are not required to teach in order to join the co-op—but please understand: we cannot run this co-op without teachers. This is a cooperative effort in the truest sense of the word. Every class your child attends exists because another parent stepped up to teach it.

If you are able, we strongly encourage you to offer a class—even a simple one. You don’t need to be a certified teacher or an expert—just someone with a willingness to serve and something to share.

If teaching a full class isn’t possible for you this year, consider helping as a classroom assistant. Many teachers would gladly welcome help with activities, supervision, or simply having another adult present. This kind of support is often flexible and doesn’t necessarily require a weekly commitment—it can work around your schedule.

If you can’t help this year, please prayerfully consider teaching or assisting next year. The strength and success of the co-op depend on all of us taking turns contributing where we can.

Even if teaching or assisting isn’t feasible right now, you are still expected to help in other meaningful ways, such as clean-up, hall monitoring, event planning, or supporting teachers as needed.

Our co-op thrives because families give what they can. Without volunteers, there is no co-op.

Why should I consider teaching at the co-op?

Teaching is one of the most meaningful ways to contribute to our community—and it comes with great benefits:

You don’t have to be a professional educator—just someone with a willing heart and something to offer. Whether you teach core subjects, art, life skills, or a unique hobby, your contribution is invaluable.

What ages does the co-op serve?

This varies each year based on what classes parents offer. This year, we have classes from preschool through high school, but that is not the case every year. Class availability always depends on enrollment and teacher volunteers.

What kinds of classes are offered?

Each year is different! We aim to offer a mix of academic and enrichment classes. Some examples include science, writing, math, art, drama, and P.E. Not all subjects are offered every year.

Do I need a temple recommend to attend the co-op?

No, students and teachers are not required to have a recommend. However, all leaders and board members must hold current temple recommends, and the main teachers of each class should be members in good standing. Non-member students must have a sponsor who is a member in good standing and will attend with them.
